NIAC Spring 2025 COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations (hiqa.ie)
- Twice-yearly boosters for 80+, 70-79 without recent vaccine, care home residents, and immunocompromised.
- Preferred: antigenically updated mRNA vaccines; alternative: protein-based.
- Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalisation at 3-6 months: 47% (65-79), 39% (80+).
"Ireland's National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) updated COVID-19 vaccination recommendations for Spring 2025, continuing twice-yearly boosters for high-risk groups: those aged 80+, 70-79 without a vaccine in 12 months, long-term care residents, and immunocompromised individuals aged 6 months+. Antigenically updated mRNA vaccines are preferred, with a six-month interval from last dose or infection. The recommendations are based on persistent SARS-CoV-2 circulation without seasonality, waning immunity in older adults, and vaccine effectiveness of 39-47% against hospitalisation after 3-6 months. Safety signals from the US (GBS, stroke) were not replicated in a Danish study."
